History : a long and rich university tradition
The first founded in France !
The city of Montpellier represents a long and rich university tradition. Its university was one of the first founded in France (13th century) and its faculty of medicine can boast about being one of the oldest in the Western world.
Higher education in Montpellier goes back to the Middle Ages, with the founding of the faculty of medicine in 1222, the faculty arts and the faculty of law. The University of Montpellier, founded on October 26, 1289 by Pope Nicholas IV groups together the Schools of Medicine, Arts and Law and is the third university created in France, after those of Paris and Toulouse.
At the beginning of the 15th century, a faculty of theology was added, followed by the foundation of the first chair of chemistry in 1676. The education of theology (1421), then of sciences (1809) and of pharmacy came up successively, contributing to give to the University of Montpellier an unfailingly - excellent reputation.
In 1970, the former faculties formed three distinct universities.
